ECI Course Descriptions

ECI Course 1: Supporting Young Children’s Social, Emotional, and Self-Regulatory Development throughout the Day

This course is focused on increasing early childhood teachers’ knowledge about specific types of teacher-child interactions that promote the development of social-emotional and self-regulatory skills. Teachers will practice using these interactions in their VPI classroom with the goal of enhancing the supports they provide to children in their classrooms.

ECI Course 2: Supporting Young Children’s Thinking, Problem-Solving, and Language Skills throughout the Day

This course focuses on helping teachers build environments and interactions that support the development of children’s thinking, problem-solving, and language skills across content areas – including literacy, mathematics, and social-emotional. Teachers will complete field-based assignments, apply learning in their VPI classrooms, and receive feedback ensuring they can enact the practices learned.

ECI Course Requirements

These courses are being offered online by the University of Virginia (UVA). There is no fee for the professional development course. However, teachers will need approximately one hour a week to complete the course materials. Teachers must also meet the following technology requirements.

These courses include capturing five to ten minutes of video in the classroom. These videos will need to be uploaded to the online platform containing the course. The technology required to accomplish the video capture and upload will look like one of the following*:

  1. Computer or laptop with working camera and internet connection – This setup can be used to either capture video directly into the online platform containing the course or capture the video separately and upload the file into the platform. If capturing directly in the platform, this method requires a steady, fast internet connection. Interruptions to the internet connection will cause the recording to stop.
  2. Tablet or phone** with working camera and internet connection – This setup requires separate steps for capturing video and uploading. The device does not need to be connected to the internet while recording. The upload can take place directly from these types of devices as long as they connect to the internet. While uploading personal data charges may apply if using a data connection instead of wifi.
  3. Digital camera*** or camcorder – This setup requires separate steps for capturing video and uploading. Using these types of devices also requires a separate step for transferring the video to a computer or laptop with an internet connection to be uploaded. The computer or laptop must have a usb port or sd card reader compatible with the format used by the camera or camcorder for the file transfer to be successful.

*Space is required to place the recording device to capture interactions in the classroom. In the case of tablets, phones, or other specific recording devices tripods or stands may be necessary.
**Storage capacity on some phones may be an issue. At least five gigabytes of free space is required for every capture.
***Some cameras limit the amount of time a video can be captured. Not all cameras will be suitable for this project.
In cases where a separate step is used for capturing and uploading video, uploading may take anywhere between two and twenty minutes or more depending on connection speed. During an upload, the connection must be maintained or the upload will fail and need to be restarted.
